As Balthasar himself puts it, “theo-logic begins with the self-revelation of the triune God in the Incarnation of the divine Logos, and the Logos is the Word, the Son, and the expositor of the Father. It is as such that he understands himself and as such that he wishes to be understood” (Hans Urs von Balthasar, Theo-logic II, Preliminary Note). Hence the central question of the present volume: How can God’s Logos express himself in creaturely finitude while being heard as the unabridged Word that he is? In exploring this issue, Balthasar shows how Christ’s Incarnation and Passion presuppose the world’s expressive capacities, but also establish and fulfill them as well. Christ is the truth of God revealed in the truth of the world without confusion or separation, and the world’s contribution to this revelation “from below” consists most of all in readiness to receive it as it is given “from above.”
