Obituary: Erich Przywara

Erich Przywara SJ (1889-1972) was a German-Polish philosopher and theologian. Best known for synthesizing the thought of prominent thinkers around the notion of the analogy of being, he also authored a three-volume philosophic commentary to Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, “Deus Semper Maior”. He was a member of the board for the Jesuit journal Stimmen der Zeit in Munich until it was banned by the Gestapo in 1941. Przywara was an important influence upon his student and fellow Jesuit Hans Urs von Balthasar, who regarded him as an “unforgettable guide and master.” Therefore, we present here the obituary Balthasar wrote just after Przywara’s death.
